An Atlas of the Eastern Sioux
by Paul Durand
Edited by Robin Siev Durand
Valerie Maisonneuve, Programmes Culturels
Illustrations by Rene E. Durand
The second of Paul Durand's books, "Where the Waters Gather and the Rivers Meet" expands upon the content of his first book.
It includes Dakota and Ojibwa place-names for all of southern Minnesota -- a region stretching from Lake Mille Lacs on the north, into Iowa on the south, and including portions of eastern South Dakota and western Wisconsin.
This hardcover book has 138 pages and includes several sketches drawn by Paul's twin brother Rene.
There is an original map (part historical document, part work of art) folded in the back pocket of the book.
The book also includes a prelude written by Rev. Gary Cavender, a brief pronunciation guide, a background on the Dakota language by Rubem Lima, two indexes, and of course an explanation of each place-name.
